Nine historically Black fraternities and sororities, each with a distinct legacy, united under a shared purpose in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council represents nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations. Each organization has its own distinct founding story, traditions, and programmatic focus. Together, they form a powerful coalition for community service, academic excellence, and cultural advancement in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Membership in NPHC organizations is by invitation through an official intake process managed by individual chapters. The SF NPHC does not process membership inquiries. To learn about membership opportunities, contact the national headquarters of your organization of interest directly.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Fraternity

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is the first intercollegiate historically Black fraternity, founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The fraternity developed programs to instill the values of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, Alpha chapters actively engage in voter registration, mentorship of young Black men, scholarship programs, and civic advocacy aligned with the fraternity's historic commitment to social justice and community advancement.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African-American college-trained women, founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Bay Area chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha are known for their leadership in health equity, education, political engagement, and economic development. The sorority's programmatic presence throughout San Francisco, Oakland, and the East Bay reflects a sustained commitment to community uplift and sisterhood.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was founded on January 5, 1911, at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Its founding purpose was achievement, and that mission guides every facet of the organization's work to this day.

Chapters active in the Bay Area carry out the fraternity's Guide Right program — a youth mentorship initiative focused on career development and life skills — along with community service, voter registration, and professional networking events.

Bay Area Omega chapters are recognized for their National Achievement Week programming, social action initiatives, and mentoring programs aimed at helping young men navigate higher education and professional pathways.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University. It is a public service sorority with a membership of primarily college-educated women committed to constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community.

Delta chapters throughout the Bay Area are recognized leaders in economic development, educational achievement, political action, physical and mental health, and international awareness programming. Their Five-Point Programmatic Thrust has driven decades of meaningful Bay Area impact.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was founded at Howard University on January 9, 1914, by three young men — A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown — who envisioned an organization that would exist to exemplify the Bigger and Better Business principle.

Sigma chapters in the Bay Area are dedicated to brotherhood, scholarship, and service. Their Sigma Beta Club mentoring program engages young men in communities across San Francisco, Oakland, and the East Bay, while public service initiatives address issues ranging from economic empowerment to education equity.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, was founded on January 16, 1920, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The sorority was founded on the principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. Zeta Phi Beta is the only NPHC organization whose founders also established a sister fraternity — Phi Beta Sigma.

Bay Area Zeta chapters lead programs addressing literacy, health awareness, community service, and youth development. Their Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) national program drives significant community impact across the region.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., was founded on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven young school teachers. It is the only historically Black Greek-letter organization founded at a predominantly white institution.

Sigma Gamma Rho chapters in the Bay Area are deeply engaged in STEM education advocacy, anti-human trafficking awareness, youth enrichment, and public health programming. Their Wee Savers, Swim 1922, and RhoMobile initiatives bring innovative community solutions to Bay Area neighborhoods.

Iota chapters in the Bay Area prioritize mentoring, scholarship support, and community service programming. Their presence adds a vital perspective to the SF NPHC — a reminder that the tradition of Black Greek-letter excellence continues to grow and evolve.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative organization composed of nine historically Black fraternities and sororities, collectively referred to as the "Divine Nine." The SF NPHC is the regional chapter coordinating member organizations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
Membership is by invitation through each organization's official membership intake process. The SF NPHC does not manage individual chapter membership. Please visit the national website of your organization of interest for more information. Membership interest should be directed to active chapters at accredited institutions.
Undergraduate chapters are based at colleges and universities and are made up of enrolled students. Graduate (or alumni) chapters are composed of initiated members who have graduated or are no longer enrolled in undergraduate programs. The SF NPHC represents both undergraduate and graduate chapters throughout the Bay Area.
